UNION CITY, CALIFORNIA - When you’re old, tripping at home or on the street often can mean a trip to the hospital. Stacy Blackard is one of the instructors for Spectrum’s fall-prevention program, which centers on biweekly hourlong sessions aimed at maintaining or building strength and balance for people age 60 and older in the greater Hayward area.

On a recent Thursday, about 20 participants went through the motions at the Ruggieri Senior Center, sometimes seated, sometimes standing. They balanced on one leg, then another, arms outstretched, then at their side.

Program manager Kelin Clement said they see a lot of progress among the clients who keep coming back. Some have weaned themselves from assistance devices, and one woman has gained enough strength to rise out of her wheelchair and take a fiew steps.

Most of the participants are female and the average age is in the early 80s.
